What is CBT?
There are definitely a lot of acronyms in therapy and it can be hard to keep up. CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy emphasizes the connection between thinking, feeling, and doing. It helps kids and teens identify difficult thoughts and behaviors that cause distress. For young children Cognitive Behavioral Therapy can be combined with Play Therapy.

How is DBT different from CBT?
Dialectical Behavioral Therapy or DBT is a type of more intensive Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. In its most classic form your child would attend two hours of group and one hour of individual therapy per week and work through a specific curriculum.
Create Wellness Center for Child and Adolescent Therapy offers the skills portion of DBT or what some call “DBT Lite”. In this model your child will work from the skills curriculum learning the core skills modules of:
Learning and practicing these skills happen within the weekly therapy appointment with some homework between sessions of tracking mood and symptoms daily. Parents are also a part of the process and you will have your own curriculum and modules you will work through so you can learn the skills alongside of your child.

How can CBT and DBT help?
Through Cognitive Behavioral Therapy kids and teens will work to shift thinking patterns, make different choices, and learn new skills to improve their mood and choices. CBT and DBT can be helpful for a wide range of difficulties children and teens face including anxiety, depression, or difficulties with anger.
Your child will get to be very good at assessing their thoughts and identify if they are working for them (ie productive, helpful, or regulating) or if they aren’t (ie increasing distress and keeping them stuck). They will also learn skills like regulation skills and mindfulness and will figure out what they need to add to their routine (maybe things like better sleep, seeing friends more instead of being on technology, or getting a better system for organization) or take out (binging on video games or hitting the snooze button 10 times).

- Distress Tolerance - the ability to tolerate distressing life events
